Did you know that most prospective clients will do a search online for a business before they will give you contact you?  They’ll look for your business on Google, Yelp and other places to see if you’re a reputable company.  And if you’re not listed, then you have no chance to grab their attention and get them to call or email you.

That’s why it’s vital that you build your online presence.  In this post, I’m going to show you 5 effective strategies to get more people to visit your website so that you can get higher quality leads and more sales.

1. Local Directories

Local directories are the new Yellow Pages — just much more effective at driving traffic to your website and won’t cost you a dime.

There are hundreds — even thousands — of local directories that you can submit your website to.  Chances are that if you submit to some of these directories that you’ll get start to get some inquiries from them.

The key is to submit to all the top directories first — Yelp, Homestars,, etc.  Then you can start submitting to all the niche relevant directories in your space.

You’d be surprised how many niche related directories there are, all with the potential of driving more traffic back to your website.

By casting a wider net, you’ll have a much greater chance of getting more inquiries — not to mention all the local SEO benefits to boot!

2. Google Search

Despite all the hype around Yahoo and Bing in the recent years, Google is still the leader in search engines.  They still have over 60% of the market share, and aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, so it makes sense to use them a source of driving quality traffic back to your website.

How do you get more traffic from Google?

First, you need to have a website.  It doesn’t have to be a large, feature-rich website either.  It can be something very basic that has a couple of pages about who you are, who you serve, what services you offer, why they should choose you, client testimonials, and how they can contact you.

Once you have your website online, then you’ll need to optimize it for SEO using your primary keywords.  Google uses keywords — and many other factors — to rank website in the search engines.  If you don’t choose the right keywords, then you’ll have a hard time ranking and getting traffic to your website.

So for example, if you’re an bookkeeper based in Toronto, then you may want to optimize for a keyword such as “bookkeeper toronto”.  Seems fairly intuitive, but it’s important to do your keyword research first to determine which keywords get the most search volume.  This way you won’t waste time optimizing for keywords that don’t matter.

Lastly, you’ll need to build links to your website.   You can either do it yourself if you know how to find quality sites and link back to yours, or you’ll need to outsource it.  However, it’s important to do your due diligence.  Not all links are equal — especially with Google.  So make sure when you hire an SEO agency that you ask for some samples to get an idea of what types of links they will build for your business.

3. Facebook Ads

As of today, Facebook has over 1 billion active users.  That’s 1/7th of the worlds total population.  If you don’t have a presence on Facebook, then you are certainly missing out.  If you’ve been contemplating putting up a Facebook Page, then there’s no better time to start than now.

To get started with Facebook Ads, you’ll need to sign up with Facebook and create a Business page.  Once you do that, then you’ll need to create an ad, choose on objective (website clicks, facebook likes, etc.), upload an image, choose an audience, and budget.  Once your ad is approved then you can start driving targeted traffic to your Facebook Page and website.

Keep in mind that there’s a lot that goes into starting and managing a Facebook page and ads campaign.  You need to do some research using Facebook Audience to first determine your the right audience for campaign, otherwize you’ll end up wasting a lot of time and money.  So make sure that you take some time to do the research well before you start your campaign.

Lastly, don’t make the mistake of sending people directly to your homepage or sales page from a Facebook ad.  It’s a costly mistake that so many business owners and entrepreneurs make.  Once they realize that they’re not getting any sales, then they’ll usually just turn off their campaign, and say that it didn’t work out for them.

What you want to do instead is send your visitors to a landing page that offers them something for free — could be a free consultation, free webinar training, free trial, free audit, etc.  This way when people land on your page, they won’t be confused and feel that you just trying to sell them on something.  They’ll be much more like to take you up on your free offer.  You can always sell them later once you’ve built some trust and rapport with your prospective customer.

4. Google Adwords

Unlike Google Organic Search — which we discussed earlier — you have to pay every time some clicks on your ad when advertising on the Google Adwords platform.  However, the benefit to using Adwords is that your website can be listed at the top of the search engines for your primary keywords.  This gives you a unique advantage over every other competitor.  If you are willing to pay for it, then you can dominate your space.

The key to using Adwords is targeting the right keywords, creating relevant ads, and landing pages (with the right offer).  As with Facebook Ads, you don’t want to send people to a homepage or sales page.  Most people that land on those pages will click back from where they came from.  So if you want to do well, then create a good landing page with a FREE offer (free consultation, trial, webinar, etc.).  If you set it up this way and drive people to these targeted landing pages, you’ll have a much better chance of getting more leads, and sales for your online business.

5. Guest Posts

One of the most underrated and underused strategies for entrepreneurs and small business owners to drive traffic to their websites is to guest post.  Guest posting involves reaching out to relevant blogs and sites in your niche or industry, and asking to write a guest post on their site.  The benefit to you is that you get a link back to your website, more exposure, greater credibility.

To start guest posting, simply do a search on Google for “your niche + write for us”.  For example, “bookkeeper + write for us”.  This way, you’ll find a lot of great sites that you can start pitching to.  Keep in mind that in order to guest post, you’ll need to follow their guest posting guidelines.

You also can’t just promote your business, products or services.  You need to add value to the blogs readers, so that they get something out of reading your post — not just a sales message.   But if you do this right, it can be a great way to get more clients for your business.

So these are just 5 ways to drive more traffic to your website.  There are plenty more, but what matter most is that you get started on one of them.  If you start getting more traffic and leads, you’ll feel a lot more motivated to continue to reinvest your time, money and effort into scaling your marketing.
